A while back, Typ0 and I posted about our neighbors. Just little snippets about the people we see everyday, walking on the street... (you know how the song goes?) A long while back. On those lines,…

Sorry I haven't checked in with this group. The month has flown by with the winter descending on us along with swine flu and school and holidays. I managed to survive NaBloPoMo, although today I've found myself in a bad mood... I think it's because I'm missing the Thanksgiving festivities back home. It was always my favorite holiday and really kicked off the Christmas season of joy and giving for me. I'll have to work hard to kick it off here anyway.

Hope everyone else is doing better than I am ;)

Canadians don't pay tax abroad, but I'd have to go home and spend six months re-establishing my residency there before I could get health care for free again.

Through the Hash House Harriers, we do a lot of culture-sharing with the Korean hashers - we celebrate Cinco de Mayo, Thanksgiving, etc. However, otherwise I don't cook much.

We have different system in Finland.
You work > pay taxes > free healthcare (10e office payment).
Now an expat > no taxes to Finland because we applied 2 free yrs while in Egypt.
Even if I was diagnosed with breast cancer last May > I got FREE operation and treatment + medication for 5 yrs.
But we've paid h...l of a lot of taxes before moving here.
Almost 60%! even if we didn't use free healthcare for years or only once a year.

We have also free dentist but the queue > could be up to one year. So we always go to private clinic which is very expensive BUT we get about 30% back from the government.

The more you earn > more taxes.
That's how we try to balance wellbeing to all social groups.

Of course the rich ones know how to avoid being that much but that's totally another story...

Have you guys heard that as part of President Obama's universal healthcare legislation he is proposing a tax of up to $1900.00 for those of us living abroad. I posted info about contact senators on my blog.

This weekend we're introducing our Italian friends to steak sandwiches, pumpkin soup, caramel apples and rice crispy treats. What things from the "homeland" do you treat your new friends to?

If you're looking for something to write about today, it's Think Green Thursday. It always interesting to hear about what, if anything, other cultures are doing to promote sustainable living.
