Here's a few ideas for items you might choose to stop buying in plastic, and what you could do instead:
Produce - buy it naked!
Laundry Detergent - switch to powder, use a bit less
Bread - haven't you been wanting to drag out the breadmaker anyway?
Peanut Butter - choose a brand that comes in glass
Iced Half-Caf Frappuccino with Extra Whip - ask for paper with no lid, or bring a reusable cup from home
The Whole Enchilada - take a hint from the city of San Francisco and swear off plastic grocery bags entirely. Bring your own!
Just wanted to stop in and agree: NO PLASTIC SHOPPING BAGS, EVER. Keep a set of inexpensive canvas bags in your car or, if you use public transport, by your door, so you don't forget when you go to the store. At a trillion plastic bags per year, this is getting grim.
I am waaaay to lazy to make my own bread. Like, way too lazy. But I buy bread from the bakery section of the market. They sell it in paper bags that I can recycle or reuse as lunch bags. I slice the bread when I get home and store it in a container in the fridge and it stays fresh for about a week! Awesome! PS: You go, Sash! Way to get r done!
I wanted to share that I make my own laundry soap, which saves me $$ and also keeps me from using lots of plastic containers! I do make it in a 5 gallon plastic container, but I use it over and over.
We do use some plastic baby bottles, but I am SO glad that they recently came out with glass baby bottles again! They are made by Evenflo and we have seen them on Amazon and also at Babies R Us!
For produce, etc., my friend Lindsay sells some awesome mesh bags on her site: http://www.divinepetite.com, look at the Green Living page!
