Food History

Adulteration the First

I warned you that there will be a small series of interesting stuff on food adulteration. Over the next two days my special guest blogger is Ian Hemphill, of Herbie’s. He is one of Australia’s leading spice experts and will give you the low-down on five of his favourites and what adulteration means [...]

the month ahead

I’ve taken a day off from blogging to line up some goodies for you. There will be guest bloggers. And they have interesting things to say. I’ll introduce them as they appear, but I thought I’d let you know now that they’re coming, so that you can put the coffee pot on, or something. [...]

Food and thunder

Summer came in last night with a mutter of thunder. It’s been gently storming for a few days and I kept forgetting (because I was too busy muttering imprecations against the weather) that I meant to write a comment on the change of seasons and what it means for produce or even a thought [...]

Being Jewish, eating Ham, and the vexed question of Christmas trees

I was going to give you a lard or ham recipe from The Neighborhood Cook Book, but the heart has gone out of me. I had the annual “Why aren’t you putting up a Christmas tree this Sunday?” discussion – this year with a group of pre-teens – and I have suddenly lost my [...]

Conflux banquet theme!!

I have permission! I have permission! It’s time to announce the theme of next year’s Conflux Banquet. We’re cheating madly next year. We so loved the cocktails this year that pre-dinner drinks and etceteras shall be all themed “Mardi Gras 1945.” The dinner itself won’t be twentieth century, though it shall definitely [...]

Timezones and me and NaBloPoMo

We're not happy with each other, timezones and me.

I was so pleased to only have one day of NaBloPoMo to go and to have safely reached the end (well, just about) and to have blogged every day and even twice some days for both my blogs, that I took a celebratory look at my blogs. I wanted to exult over seeing each and every day filled in.

My LJ blog is in Australian time and shows that I blogged every single day and then a bit. My other blog is in US time. It has gaps. The thing… Continue

NaBloPoMo

You can find my blog entries for the month on http://www.foodpast.com (and there's a feed from there to my page here). I'll also be trying (though not as hard) to post every day at http://gillpolack.livejournal.com, but these posts are mostly not serious and normally rather strange.

I don't type nearly as effectively with one hand behind my back, though. If I blogged using my big toe instead of my hands that would make it *really* interesting.

Are Canberra bloggers taking over the blogverse, or is it my imagination? It makes sense, us taking over the blogverse. We have intellect, charm and an amazing lack of sunbronzed lifesavers in our favour.

Hi Gillian,

I have a feeling you're going to be able to do this NaBlo thing with one hand tied behind your back. Good luck!

Cheers

Hi Gillian,

I might have seen you presenting a few years back on Arthurian literature in history - are you still based in Canberra?

Cheers, Andrew
