The Unauthorized Autobiography of Me

i write songs and melodic lies, fiction and poetry and something inbetween, a kind of connection between my subconscious and my hand that bypasses most parts of my brain. i think in colors and try in vain to make a physical representation of what dashes through my mad brain. living is art to me: i understood culture jamming intuitively before i knew what it was called. i can't take a photo of myself without doing something strange and artistic to it. i often draw odd little stick-figure picture-stories in black and red marker on oddly shaped pads of paper. most of all, blogging is ART to me! why log my day, when i could log anything at all?

what kind of friends am i looking for? strange people. aliens. cowboys. intelligent people. unpretentious people. people who aren't people. figments of someone else's imagination. sick people. spiritual people. people who are anti-everything, or sometimes pro-everything. cats. genuine people, and other people who tell nothing but lies. reincarnated people who are a little confused. people who just got out of the asylum and can't wait to get back, because it was so much saner in there. unethical sugarcubes. people who don't dye their hair, because the natural color of it frightens them and they like to be frightened. people who've been to the top and prefer the bottom. people from other countries. people who wish they were from other countries. fellow discordians. people who appreciate the lyrics of both bob dylan and the ramones. people who have more than one facet. people who don't fit any of the above criteria, and can't quite figure out why.

here are some things i love:

ROCK 'N' ROLL, music in general (singing, writing songs, listening to music, and pretending to play various instruments - usually guitar), creative writing, foreign languages, nonsense, playing with my band, beat culture/beat poetry, reading anything and everything, elegant madness, the bohemian life, animals, nature, surrealism, lies, traveling, people who are intelligent and yet don't need to speak in five-syllable words, finding beauty in unexpected places, laughing until i get lightheaded and need to lie down on the floor, being a student of life, saving the planet, people who don't need to understand something to enjoy it, black leather, androgyny, anthropology, dada, open minds, being contrary, dressing like a gay glam boy (which i sometimes am, at heart), meaningful conversations, discordianism, fifties/sixties/seventies/eighties music (basically anything that happened before i was born), coffee and tea, abbie hoffman/kurt vonnegut/hunter s. thompson/jack kerouac/john cage/albert einstein/and too many more heroes of mine to list, scotland (it's my heartland), slash (and by slash i mean the guitarist... primarily), philosophy, anti-philosophy, subphilosophy (that's when you take philosophy and turn it inside-out and shake it upside down a few times and assign it an entirely random name, rank, and level of hysteria), having subphilosophical conversations on IM at three in the morning with people i've never met, self-education, playing drinking games with god and the devil (sometimes santa claus comes along too, if he's not too busy), denying the existence of gender, dressing up to go nowhere, being confused... and making friends, if you're still reading. :) p. s. i'm also into life, the universe, and everything, if you like that kinda stuff.

sacrifizio dell' intelletto

Sacrifizio dell' intelletto. Not as difficult as it sounds.

You start with laughter. Having the correct religious affiliation helps. (Hint: the only correct religious affiliation is mine.) Get good at laughter, because you're about to have to bid it farewell for a while. Only a while.

You follow this up with years of violently humbling servitude. Pirate ship galleys count. I'm talking humility here. You get down on your knees, whether to pray, pay, or swab the deck, it doesn't matter. It makes… Continue

oh no, what a fool I've been (or rather, am about to be)

At the last minute I decided I'm doing NaBloPoMo again this year. It's a bad idea. But I'm doing it. November is one of the busiest months of the year for me. But I'm doing it. I have five intense classes this semester. But I'm doing it. I have many better things to do with my free time. BUT I'M FREAKING DOING IT, so SHUT UP subconscious or Devil's Advocate or whatever the hell you are.

The point is, I haven't been blogging as much recently as befits my self-established tradition, so I need to… Continue

ling it up

So I just took a bunch of language proficiency tests from "ESL-languages.com". For the heck of it. And I got some unexpected answers. The possible skill levels you could achieve were 1-9, from 1 (beginner), through 5 (intermediate), up to 9 (level close to native speakers). I got:

- a six in German, which I've been studying since last February (okay, that's about what I guessed, maybe a bit higher than expected);
- a five in French, in which I honestly couldn't carry on even the simplest conver… Continue

the kind of thing I need on a Tuesday night

If two are rowing a boat

If two are rowing a boat,
one knowledgeable about the stars,
the other knowledgeable about storms,
one will lead through the stars,
the other will lead through the storms,
and at the end, at the very end
in their recollection the sea
will be blue.

- Reiner Kunze

der eine

der andre
kundig der stürme,
wird der eine

wird der andre

und am ende ganz am ende
wird das meer… Continue

Ahh, but you have mastered playing to a click track, which is the great bane of my existence. My tempo has improved over the years, but I'm just terrible playing to none-live percussion. It never ends well.

"Original Sin" is really catchy; I like the little bass walk in the background. I suspect I'll be singing this tomorrow morning.

Sometimes I luck out and stumble onto something intriguing and interesting. I enjoyed your writing and now I enjoyed your music. Thanks for sharing it. I am a pretty ordinary person who does enjoy the extraordinary. I guess I am probably one of the people who sits on the ground of the teeter totter of life. Once and a while I do lift off a little.
