Whenever anyone got a card from my in-laws, John would have drawn a cartoon of this guy in a sombrero with a moustache and peasant clothing that would have something pithy to say about the occasion that engendered the card. This guy was, obviously, John's characterization of himself. There was a second thing - John used to carve wood - bas reliefs and small wooden figurines. Annie comes home from Arizona today. I spoke to her last evening - she was having a hard time dealing with the fact that she no longer has her father. I really wish I could have been there to hold her - to offer some comfort. I really feel terrible when she cries - I want so much to make her smile and make the tears go away. And, of course, I couldn't stay in AZ long enough for the funeral. I wish I could have. At least, she knows that.
