Name or Pseudonym:
Mom Unplugged
About Me:
I am Mom Unplugged, a mother of three children, ages 21 months, 5, and 7 (and way too many pets). We have no TV, no video games, and no loud toys. Please join me as I attempt to make sense of this crazy life we lead. I promise to dispense plenty of unasked-for advice along the way, as I swim upstream in our increasingly technological world while struggling not to drown!

Beans - The Perfect Toy?

I am officially procrastinating. Instead of packing for our big trip tomorrow (Phoenix by car, then East Coast by air on Friday) I am writing a Very Important Post about…well, hmm…beans? Perhaps I’ll share a quick idea of what I came up with to help my 2 year-old be entertained during dinner preparation. I have some [...]

Potty Fiesta!

The big excitement around here at the moment is the “poTEEE” as my 2 year-old calls it. She has been interested in potties of all sorts from about 18 months on. I have been the one who has been stalling the whole potty training process (or potty “learning,” as they say now). I am [...]

Garden - Miniature Fairy Garden (Weekly Unplugged Project)

We have had a Wee Enchanted Garden kit in the closet for several years, but had not yet put it together. So that’s what we did this week for the Unplugged Project theme of garden. The Wee Enchanted Garden is a mini fairy garden in a box. Since we love fairies, it was [...]

Technical Difficulties

Last night I turned on my computer to write our Unplugged Project post and there was nothing. No blog. No admin panel. Only blinding whiteness. Tech support was stumped but working on it, so I left the problem in their far more capable hands and went to bed.  This morning all was magically returned [...]

Do You Ladies Need a Laugh Today?

If you do, then read this NPR Story Corps story from 94 year-old Betty Jenkins, or better yet, click “listen now” on the story page to hear it in her own words: A Bra’s Tale: Detour on a Daughter’s Trip Abroad (3 min 18 sec) ++++++++++++++++ Tags: Everything Else!, NPR, story corps, websites Related posts Imaginative Play and Cognitive Function [...]

Nerds Do Vegas

Well...actually Flagstaff and Winslow, unless we miss the exit. Taking a night off from serious blogging for an early bed before the Big Field Trip tomorrow. Hopefully getting some Good Mom Karmic Brownie Points by driving a car load of giggling 6 to 9 year-olds. Wish me luck.

Hi Elizabeth,
Please feel free to use any of my holiday ideas. I'm glad you found them useful. I'll have some more coming up in the next few days and weeks too!

Great to see you again! I love your holiday strategies. May I use some on the A Wild Ride blog (with proper attribution and link of course!)

Cheers, Elizabeth

thanks for starting this group! i often feel like the only parent i know who doesn't watch tons of tv herself and also doesn't allow my kid to watch tv either. (we watch occasional dvds--a big favorite now is the set we have of cirque du soleil! my kid wants to be a cirque acrobat!)

Hi! I like your "unplugged-ness." We're not quite there (we like the TV from time to time). But video games are a huge NONO around here. I didn't even know what people were talking about when they said x-box or wii... they stared at me with disbelief as they explained. The loud toys are super annoying as well.
