Happy Independence Day 2008

Wishing you a very happy Independence Day!

Decks - UGH!

I'm staining my deck. It's been a long time since it was done and we need to put a good preservative down this year. I was going to have someone else do it, but the few people that gave us prices were high, and they said they wouldn't be able to get to it until later this summer. So, me being the impatient person that I am, decided that I could do it now and save a bundle of money.

Everything has been going smoothly until it came time to put the finish coat on the main part of the deck. Cabot makes a wonderful stain that you can put on your deck, house, or anyplace, or so I've read and heard. The problem is, there are so many different variations of stains to use that picking the stain for the decking floor seems impossible. I've tried three different kinds now, I only stained a small section - thank God, and now I have to strip the section that I did and go back to using what I think is best. I will no longer pay any attention to the guys at the paint store, they think they know everything but don't. Each person has told me something different and according to them, it is impossible for me to do it myself. I think what they're really saying is, "I really don't know anything about this stuff, so I'm going to give you the line that you should hire someone, that way you'll look like the stupid person, and I can say I told you so after your done." I don't think so!

I'm so angry at these guys right now I could scream, but guess what, they're closed, and now they won't be opening again until after the 4th of July and I'm stuck. I think I'll have to take my business somewhere else.

So there, that's my frustration for today. I will get this done, and I will like it when I'm done, but mostly I'll be so glad that it's done and never want to do this again!

Sometimes Sweat Makes a Better Day

Host unlimited photos at slide.com for FREE!

It was hot and humid today. I worked ten hours and sweat more than I think I ever have. Sometimes I can't tell if I'm sweating because of hot flashes or because of how hot it is outside:) I can't remember the last time I was so dirty. There was dirt in my hair, and my clothes couldn't have seen a more sloppy designer; I didn't feel very feminine. I paused in my dirtiness to take a look at the sky noticing a thunderstorm building in the cloud above me. The cloud seemed to grow by the second, getting bigger and puffier until it became heavy with water and turned grey. I thought about how big the sky was in comparison to the cloud, and how little this large four story tree was that we were taking down. I suddenly became very insignificant.

Working outside after being involved in so many lives has changed my attitude in everything I'm doing. I can't really explain my feelings, and I probably shouldn't right now, but I'm different. Maybe I was more burned out than I thought, or maybe I was just ready for a change. Looking at today, I found time for some simple thoughts, worked up some sweat, and got dirt under my fingernails. Today I was not female, I was not fifty, I was not someones mother or wife. I was just a part of nature; I was part of being outside where there was a lot going on. If I had been at work a month ago, perhaps I would have been complaining about the heat!

On the Run - Update on Carol

Carol is doing well. Her transplant was uneventful, even though they had to postpone it one more day. Her new stem cells are in her body and the doctors are waiting to see if her bone marrow accepts these new healthy buggers! We won't know anything more for about 10 days or so.

Thank you all for the prayers, thoughts, and kind words. You are all such wonderful people to be thinking of someone you don't know. Why don't they put this good stuff in the newspapers?

Until next time: still on the run, but I believe I'm starting to see the possibilities of organizing my time. Wishes sent your way for a peaceful, but out of the box day!

Changes, Adjustments, and Other Issues

So life has been full, fun, and ever changing. I've been working hard, loving every minute of it, and finding a little trouble balancing my schedule. I've only been out of work three weeks, so I will be giving myself a little break in getting organized. So far I've:

1. Been gardening for two people. This of course does not include my own yard, which I hope to catch up on.

2. I started working for the tree guy again. I just bought myself a new pair of work boots - yes, that's them. This time I got the ones with the steel toe. They look a little clunky but fashionable enough. I also got myself a pair of carharts; pants with the extra material so thorns and stuff can't penetrate the fabric and make you bleed. I hate to bleed!

3. I'm working for an investor too. He's only one day a week so that time is easy. What's fun about learning to invest money is that when you work for someone as good as the guy I'm working for, you can learn some good stuff! I like this job, because I only have to concentrate on the job and nothing else while I'm in that office. It's almost a break for me.

4. I'm staining my deck, I'm too cheap to hire someone. The only thing I like about this job is that it's outside.

5. I haven't even started with the list of things to do in my house. There's painting, window washing, and I want to spring clean every room. I'll have to be patient, I'll get to it sooner or later.

Want to know a secret? I have an interview Monday! I'll fill you in on that later. I'm excited about it though, and they agreed that I can wait until autumn to start if things work out well.

Well, my life is up and down. Carol is due to have her transplant on June 24th. Thank you all for the prayers and kind wishes. Your wishes are appreciated more than I can tell you.

Until next time: Sometimes it takes a good shake up to realize how precious life is. I hope today you have a day that doesn't need shaking up, but a day that brings you smiles.

Women Who Blog

I've been meeting many people in the blogging world. The ones I'm meeting are mostly women. I wonder - is it mostly women? I know there are men out there and perhaps it's just me noticing more women. Kind of like when you notice something you haven't noticed before, like a certain car, and suddenly you see it all the time. Then you start to think, what have I been missing? Well, there are many of us out there. I'm happy for it though. It's nice to reach out beyond my little world and see wome…

Your son studied in Italy? Well aren't you one hip mama! I studied in Florence from 89-90. Have been back several times. Boboli and Piti Palace are my favorite places in the world.
