Dear Pammy, How do I get my cat to stay inside?

A reader writes:

We adopted a stray who is so loving. We got him neutered and all his shots, but we don’t want him to go outside anymore. But he still wants it. He’ll hang around all day, trying to shoot out the door. We worry about him getting hurt, but if he wants it so much should we give in?

Dear Readers,

No. You shouldn’t give in.

There’s very good reasons for not letting our cats outside. There’s cars, diseases, f…

Know the Types: The Beta

Having a Beta cat is like having a Dr. Watson to your Sherlock Holmes. They are boon companions, best buddies, and always interested and admiring of your efforts on their behalf.

Beta cats see you as the way to get their environment the way they want it. Cat Solution: More Cats!

It must be the phase of the moon. Five times this week I've run across situations where my best advice is my favorite advice: the solution to your cat problem is... more cats!

In each case the family had gotten a kitten who was harassing the older cat. In each case the older cat was a quiet, shy, withdrawn type. In each case the people wanted to know, "How can I get the two cats to like each other?"

Unfortunately, that's not possible. To do that, we would have to change the cat…

Raising a Happy Kitten

Kittens are a special challenge because, like all young things, they have trouble remembering what they are supposed to do when what they want to do is uppermost in their mind.

So they will, like RJ, chase a fly into a lamp and break it. As distressing as broken stuff might be, this is actually something unlikely to happen again. If it made a big noise at the time of its demise, the kitten will decide on their…
