Martial Arts = Cooking ?!

Tomorrow is a Holiday Party potluck that my Dojo is putting on. Naturally, since I am the only person in my family here, I get to do the cooking. Since I’ve only been ‘on my own’ for a few months at this point, I’m still getting the hang of cooking (although I can now whip up stir fries in a jiffy). So, what else do I do, but look online for recipes.

I picked my two dishes, one a dessert and one a kind of brunch-ish appetizer thing, and I got to work buying the groceries last night, an…

Empi Waza!

For those of you not familiar with Japanese names for things (I'm talking to you, Taekwondo practitioners!), empi waza are elbow (empi) techniques (waza). Simple enough, right? You'd think so.

Basically, we practice three kinds of elbows:
Mawashi-empi (roundhouse elbow, a horizontal elbow strike)
Ura-empi (rising elbow, a vertical upwards strike)

The Little Ones!

I spoke with Shihan the other day about my dream to run a martial arts school. He was very supportive and helpful, and offered me many bits of advice from his experiences. Perhaps one of the most interesting to me was when he told me (in reference to something from our Leadership Class), "If you can't teach 4-7 year olds, forget about being successful." I'm not sure this is true 100%, but I understood what he meant. I'm generally weak with very young kids, and stronger with youth and teens (beca…

The Karate Creed

I had to write a paper on the Karate Creed we use at my school, and I thought this blog would be a great place to share what I learned.

So, without further ado, the Karate Creed:

1. I am Positive.
2. I avoid Drugs and other Harmful Things.
3. I am disciplined.
4. I respect myself and others.
5. I only use my Karate to protect myself.
6. Think Positive!

I've always 'sort of' believed in (martial arts) School Creeds, but I had never thought about what…

Drill of the Week: Get Your Kicks

So, for whatever reason (latent Taekwondo tendencies?) I had an urge to work my kicks today. Mostly it's because when I do mae-geri (front kick) and curl my toes back, every once in a while I catch my pinkie toe going up and out, instead of just curling straight back like it's supposed to.

What I ended up doing is going through each one of my major kicks: yoko-geri (sidekick), mawashi-geri (roundhouse kick), inside and outside mikazuki-geri (crescent kick), and back leg ??-geri (hook ki…
