Yes, I spent a month living with a family just outside of Darmstadt back in 1983 (I was 14 at the time). I took 5 years of German class in 8th grade through high school and did not get to go back until last year, when I spent a week in Dresden. I was amazed at how my language memory bounced back and I was able to get me and my non-German speaking friend around there quite well!
I am hoping to take my husband and two sons (the older one is in his second year of German!) there in 2010, after my older one graduates high school.
I am actually thinking of "basing" our trip in the Munich area. :)
