Sitting in her chair she bops long with Weezer's troublemaker as it plays from her Windows Media Player. She turns around and yells at her cat for pushing over the big box of food when he has some in his bowl. She return to the drawing board trying to decide on what to write. She leans forward in her chair and manages to get it stuck on something. Pushing backwards she can't seem to get it free so she shifts a little and brings the chair down, on her toe. She winces realizing she could have avoided that. She switches the music over to Whistle Down the Wind, and sings along with Tire Tracks and Broken Hearts, and begins to write.
“My generation's apathy. I'm disgusted with it. I'm disgusted with my own apathy too, for being spineless and not always standing up against racism, sexism and all those other -isms the counterculture has been whining about for years.” -Kurt Cobain
The main problem with apathy, is you actually have to focus to realize what you really don't care about. Yeah, I don't care about drama and stuff like that in life but that isn't really what this post is about. Honestly Mr. Cobain said it best, we don't always stand up against the isms. I know I don't generally think about it. I admit it I make racist jokes. I don't always support the gay community like I should. I don't always recycle. I spend money places I shouldn't. I don't watch my language. When it comes to things I am supposed to care about I just can't seem to get enough energy to really care. All these "issues" in our country are just things hiding the real issue we have here. Our declaration of independence states All men are created equal. Not white men are created equal, or straight men are created equal. So instead of having all these laws and committees to make sure everyone is treated right we just need to accept them. Get over the whole race thing, get over the gay thing, just allow everyone to live their lives without judgment. And thankfully our country is moving towards that, if only because the younger generations are allowing themselves to be more color and sexuality blind. Instead of picking their friends by race or preference. It's a blessing to the generations to come. Years down the road it will hopefully be normal to see interracial couples and same sex couples, they won't feel like there is a astigmatism to them. I used to date a black man, and when we went out together there were a lot of people who would make nasty comments about us being together. It made us both very uncomfortable to be out together. We tried to smile and enjoy our dates, but we ended up feeling like we were defending our relationship more than having one. I don't ever want to feel like that again, but in this country it's hard to be accepted like that. I agree with Mr. Cobain, we whine about everything we want changed but no body moves to change it. So vote, I'm not saying who to vote for that is your choice. But learn the issues and candidates, and go out and vote. Make a choice, that way you have a right to complain about the choices.
