The L Word: Season 4 - A Review

Yesterday (being Sunday) Fil and I went to Best Buy and purchased Th L Word: Season 4. I've been into The L Word since Season 1 came out on DVD. I'd seen episodes here and there, but hadn't gotten really into it until I saw Katherine Moennig (aka Shane) playing a transitioning* female under suspicion of murdering her boyfriends friend. I was completely fascinated by her and wondered if she was really a man. Her voice was so deep and raspy and she had undeniable male characteristics. After I found her on IMDb I went straight (hahahahaha) to The L Word's website. I loaded my dad's Netflix with The L Word: Season 1 and watched it religiously.

Last year I turned Fil onto The L Word and it's been an obsession ever since. She's hungrily devoured every season and anticipated the arrival of season 4 with such bated breath I thought she'd faint when we purchased it yesterday. So of course we watched it. And I mean watched it for HOURS. From 10 p.m. to about 8 a.m. THIS MORNING. So yeah, I've got something to say.

I'm impressed with this season. Season 1 was amazing, of course, it drew you into this fascinating little world where women have sex with other women and... IT'S OKAY! Well, kinda. Season 2 was full of remorse and pregnancies (unfair, by the way, because Tina got way pregnant way easy) and drama (wow that's new!) and by the end of the season everything seemed okay. Angelica arrived and for once all the anger of the world seemed to drop away. And in Season 3 everything goes to shit. Dana DIES, Shane walks out on Carmen, Jenny drops Max (surprise, surprise) and Bette kidnaps Angelica when Tina informs Bette that she doesn't want shared custody anymore.

So this season has... a lot of loose ends to tie up.

I was quite pleased with how they knotted off the Bette-Tina-Angelica thing. Bette's amazing, high-powered, gay-rights lawyer, in a comical, mocking way, showed Bette and Tina that taking the custody battle to court would ruin not just their lives, but would destroy any chance of Angelica's being raised in the quiet safety of normalcy. So the two women bit their lips and arranged shared custody. Good going, girls! Plus, Angelica is positively ADORABLE this season. When Tina was dropping her off at Bette's (the episode with the dinner party for Jodi) that little toothy grin was priceless.

I'm not digging the Max line. First off, the actress isn't that good of an actress, she feels awkwardly placed. And she's ... I don't know, it just seems very off for some reason. But, whatever.

I loved how they portrayed the falling apart of Tina's relationship with Henry. The look on her face while he's cutting his toe nails? PRICELESS!

My favourite thing about this season is that they FINALLY gave my kind of lesbian (being me, not Fil) what we've been waiting for. Or I have, at least. You see, I have an issue with the butch-y girls on this show. They're not butchy enough. Shane? She's like a teenage boy, and her she needs a hair cut, badly. Ivan was way too butch, Max actually wants to be a boy (ew, under arm hair) and Bette is just really controlling. So, when they introduced Tasha, I almost fell out of my seat, gagging on my tongue.

See, Tasha is my kind of lesbian. She wears Dickies, and has that belt buckle thing DOWN. She's traditional to a T, door opening, gift giving, honor protecting traditional. She's Fil, essentially, but a bit more uptight because of the army thing. But she's got ghetto in her too, which you know, I think is attractive.

And while Fil and I are laying there and I'm going apeshit over Tasha, she's just laughing her head off because every 5 seconds I'm saying "oh my god! She's wearing your Dickies!" and "Oh my god! You do that!". So what if I'm only attracted to that kind of woman. It's not like a I need a pair of Dickies and a wifebeater to make me sweat. (That's a complete lie, I do. Someone out there can sympathise with me.)

But, I haven't finished out season 4. Fil and I will probably watch some more after we've had our shower tomorrow morning. Currently, there is a lovely sunset outside and I really would like to play some Big Brain Academy before everyone wakes up.
