I read once that the most difficult sense "memory" to recreate was the sense of smell. In other words, we can recall images, remember songs and sounds, perhaps remember a touch or a texture, or how an ice cream cone tastes but a scent, that is harder to conjure up in the brain.
I think this is why we have things such as comfort food. Food incorporates at least two senses--smell and taste. The food and meals we grew up with have memories associated with them. There's the favorite dish we ate all…

Camping! My husband and I went backpacking in

it was early in july
on a stormy sunday afternoon
when enlightenment came to me.
I was not alone
my Angels were guarding
the sanctuary of my home.
in my mind it was
a revelation came
the spirit works sullenly
and weaves its way,
without distinction
passing into itself
beyond consciousness
and arrived at a clearness
for which i had desired
some insight into my own.
Thus arisen the pu…

I get a newsletter called "Ideal Bite." They send frequent tips on how to live a more eco-friendly life. A recent edition featured information about antiperspirants and deodorants. Some of the ingredients commonly found in these products may not be good for us.
Look out for:
Aluminum-Evidence is inconclusive, but it has been linked to Alzheimer's and some cancers.
Parabens-Linked to cancer. These are also commonly used in cosmetics, personal care products…

For me, the word "food" and "discipline" have rarely gone together in the same sentence. But when I found out my cholesterol levels needed some improvement, I chose to make a change.
About eight months ago I started eating oatmeal for breakfast - ever day. Plain oatmeal is too boring for me so I put oatmeal plus a multi-grain cereal (with nuts, granola, or fruit but low in sugar) into a bowl with a little water then I microwave it for two minutes. I let it cool a bit then add in some mi…

I love to blog about writers' awards and I especially love to fantasize that one day I'll be the one going up on stage to receive one. Not just for the money, not just for the glory and not just for the publicity ...just because it'd really be nice.
But it wouldn't be nice to have the experience I blogged about today. Find out what happened to one poor writer in Britain in my post You've got the b…

Belen and I spent a quiet evening at home last night for the 4th of July. I felt like firing up the grill but didn't want to thaw out the thousand pounds of frozen Costco meat in our fridge so we made hot dogs. Lulu and Ivory, our yellow labs, watched on as I grilled 'em up and added my secret ingredient (shh, it's celery seeds).
We ate dinner then I went out to play with the dogs for a while to keep them distracted when the fireworks noise started. We had a good time playing fetch with…

This weekend I'm scouring my favorite food magazines (Reiman publications- "Taste of Home", "Quick Cooking") for microwave recipes I can compile into a notebook for my son to take to college. Due to the rules of his dorm he can only have a microwave to cook with. I'm also looking for other recipes that don't require anything more than a microwave which includes desserts that are refrigerated or frozen, etc. (He can have a frig) So...if you have a fave recipe that only requires a refrigerator or…

I love pizza and I love cooking my own. Recently, I started making something more healthy. I use a flatbread with pizza sauce, add spinach, precooked chicken, basil, goat cheese and Laury's seasoning. Bake at 375 for 6 minutes and you have a calorie perfect dinner.
Tonight, to go back to traditional fare, I decided to use just sauce, cheese and pepperoni. Made two pizzas for me and my kiddo. Got hers all cut up and on her plate. I cut mine up and then pizza all over the floor. Forgot that I was…

I have a hard time when I go to New Orleans, because I am a vegetarian. Vegetarianism is not as readily accepted there as it is here and it is next-to-impossible sometimes to find good, healthy vegetarian fare in that city that isn't fried or simply cheese or salad. Thank goodness there is a Whole Foods Market! Katy and I go directly there from the airport upon my arrival and I stock up on healthful goods that I cook during the weeks that I spend with her. I am not a nutritionist or a nutritional consultant, but I do feel I know enough about food in layman's terms to write about it. I also find myself being queried by others and I answer to the best of my abilities. I have been making a slow gradual change towards eating "off the grid" for most of my short life. But there is one area I just can't seem to convince people on: vitamins.

So far I have two controversial food items on my favorites list. I’m not sure which is seen as worse; though pressed to make a choice, I would say the soybean and soy products are more of a hot topic. But still, I love it and think some of the hyper (or anti-hype) is bogus. Soy is versatile and can be processed in a variety of different ways. I know this seems counter-intuitive to the statement I made yesterday about eating foods in as close to there natural state as possible. In some regards…

Happy 4th of July! Today is the day we celebrate the birth of our country while loading up on all things grilled and as many different salads containing the miracle known as mayonaise. Then we end it all with pie and fireworks. Sounds good to me.

I love peanut butter. As a kid, one of my favorite snacks was peanut butter and apple, preferably Granny Smith apples. Somethings don’t change. Now I just use peanut butter in more things, like my morning oatmeal, shakes and as a delicious spicy thai sauce over noodles.
PB is also popular in Indian cuisine, where it has been cultivated for centuries. It seems that Americans have a special relationship with this nut butter. We grow the most and consume the most. In fact, in Europe in general…

I love food.
I has been an important part of my life for as long as I can remember. Some of my fondest memories are of being in the kitchen with my maternal grandmother learning how to make something. She was certainly not the most patient teacher, but she instilled in me a love and a respect for making things from scratch. Her trial by fire lessons prepared me for becoming a chef.

I woke up in the middle of the night heading towards the bathroom four times, excreting my stomach pains and feeling nauseous. I then took Pepto-Bismol and slept like a log after that.

Hey, hey all you foodies! This month's topic is food. Yesterday I blogged about culinary mysteries. Today I'm exploring food tv. That's right- Food Network. What a wonderful channel. Today I watched Dinner:Impossible. If you're not familiar with the program, the host- Robert Irvine- has to figure out how to feed dinner to a crowd each week. For instance, today's show was "Dinner Under Construction". Robert was taken to a construction site and told he had to figure out how to feed a bunch of cons…
