My son, 9, has ADD. As a matter of fact, I am the only one out of the four of us who does NOT have it. It makes life interesting. Michael was taking Strattera. It did help him concentrate and his grades were coming up and even he said he felt better about school. Things were going well until he started crying for no reason and even said he had no idea why he was crying.
We haven't tried any other meds yet. He just can not stay focused. I'll sit with him when he does his homework and you can see his mind wander off. My husband said he was in 4th grade when he was diagnosed. Our daughter was diagnosed in 4th grade as well. She is now off her medicine. She said she is able to kind of "feel when I have too much energy" and is able to calm herself.
My son, also 9, has classic symptoms of ADD, as do I. I began homeschooling him, cut out ALL artificial colorings, and started him on Nordic Natural 3,6,9 Fatty Acids. He has made a great turn around.
I can't say enough about the the importance of eliminating all artificial colorings. I used to think it was all 'tin foil hat' craziness, but it is so true that some kids can not handle it. I even have a link on my blog showing how research has proven it!
