This week will be the first time I have traveled by air since I took up knitting again. Can you take your current piece and the needles onto the plane with you?

Yes you can take knitting needles and crochet hooks on a plane:

http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibi...

You can also take:

Scissors - plastic or metal with blunt tips.
Scissors - metal with pointed tips and blades shorter than four inches in length

...as carry-on items.

That's straight from the source so it should be good. I flew in September & checked for myself then so I had that info handy ;)
