I have been going to yoga classes since last November. I started because my health was (and still is) a joke and have been pleased with the improvements so far although I really need to get myself sorted out and start practicing on my own as well as the once a week class.
My cousin Scott is the teacher and his practice takes on his own variation of the Ashtanga Vinyasa tradition which (while I've never tried any other) is perfectly suited for working on my specific aches and pains.
Any one else doing yoga? What type, how often and do you do it for the pleasure, the peacefulness of mind or like me for the health issues?
I am doing a self-paced yoga teacher training program now. I went through a phase where I was studying yoga everyday (reading the Bhagavad Gita and other related texts) and practicing at least three times a week. Then... something happened. I don't know why exactly but I just got busy and stopped making it a priority and now it has probably been a month since I last practiced. I feel the quality of my mind and life deteriorate in such a big way. For me- when I am studying and practicing yoga regularly my life feels like it exists on a different plane with deeper value. Somehow I am better able to appreciate life's gifts when I am in practice well. Also, I am better able to face life's adversities (of which there are several I am facing these days) I am really trying to motivate myself to get back in the groove. I'm much happier there. Really.

I've been doing yoga off and on for about 3 years now. I haven't done it in a while, actually, and mostly I have used videos, but about two years ago a good friend of mine was going through a yoga teacher training program, and at the end she needed to get a certain number of hours of teaching in. I was her student for that, and it was amazing. I progressed so much!
I need to get back into it. In fact, it is one of my goals for this week, to do my favorite yoga video. I like vinyassa, though I've enjoyed some of the other styles I've tried as well. I'm trying to find a studio in the area as well, but for some reason they're mostly hatha, and I'm not sure I'll like that for a class situation. I'll give it a try though!
I also feel so much better - mentally and physically - when I'm doing yoga regularly.
I haven't actually been in 2 months now due to being on night shift for a while and must admit I'm defiantly feeling not to good. Can't wait until next week when I start back as like you say Deb mentally and physically it is a great way to feel better :)
I've been doing yoga off and on for- wow, almost 7 years. Most of my teachers have had eclectic styles, borrowing from different traditions, ie: hatha with some vinyasa flow sets. My favorite teacher is Robert Boustany. He's here in Houston and I also enjoy taking classes by the students he's trained.
Currently I'm sort of in an "off" period of yoga but feeling the itch. There are free classes at my apartment complex which are nowhere near the intensity I'm used to (and prefer), but some yoga is better than no yoga!
And I do it for the physical aspect- flexibility does not come to me naturally! For peacefulness of mind, I'll just meditate, thought the two do go hand-in-hand, it seems. Sitting before a class improves my yoga and doing yoga before a sit helps me meditate.
I'm new to this blogging community. I've been blogging since I started practicing yoga about a year ago. I am now a yoga instructor. I teach Traditional Hatha Yoga (Sivananda Lineage). I teach 5-10 times a week and practice at home at least three times a week. Yoga has transformed my life. I spent a month at the Sivananda Yoga Ranch during yoga teacher training and it was an amazing experience. I highly recommend visiting an ashram if you are interested in yoga. Recently, I've started practicing Jivamukti Yoga and its has been fun trying a different style. I write about yoga a lot at my blog: Baltimore Bliss.
Be Well,
