I'm wondering what beliefs you have (if any!) that set you apart from other atheists, or from the conventional definition of atheism.

For example, although I think belief in god is ridiculous, I do believe in prayer. I don't mean praying to anyONE in particular, but focusing one's thought and transmitting it out into the world just makes sense to me. Maybe it's cause I'm a hippie and can't shake my belief in "vibes." Perhaps prayer is a way to align (or program!) one's subconscious to one's conscious goals? Maybe I really mean "meditating" or simply "wishing?"

Another belief I have is that we live in an intelligent universe. I see human beings as PART of the universe, not just beings living IN it. Humans are intelligent and ponder our own existence as well as pondering the universe, and I perceive that as the universe pondering itself. Make sense?

Do you have any beliefs like this? Or do you perceive them as pure spiritualist drivel? I'd like to know.

I think that a problem with the term "atheist" is that a lot of people view it as an absolute certainty that there isn't a god, which leads you down the slippery slope of believing something you can't prove. After all, we can't prove absolutely that there isn't a god, any more than a religious person can prove that there is one. I tend to identify myself as an agnostic, which seems to be a slightly less emotive term.

What you're doing sounds a bit like Scott Adams' affirmations. I don't see anything wrong with it; doubtful that it'll help, but it couldn't hurt and it doesn't cost anything. Most of us probably do something similar from time to time, at least informally.
