I've had the same squeamishness about calling myself "feminist" for years, despite being actively involved in reproductive justice and never having a doubt in my mind about the equality of the sexes (thanks, mom!). Somehow, being a man claiming to be a feminist seemed patriarchal, although I could never put my finger on why I felt that way.
Over the last couple of years, though, more and more women whose opinions I greatly respect have been referring to me as being feminist. And I've started to understand that the very definition of feminism- "the radical notion that women are people too" transcends gender, that it is more a statement of human rights than anything.
Of course men can be feminists! All you need to do is believe women and men should have equal rights. I love all my male feminist friends! Then again all my male friends are feminists...hmmm....
In my world, I am grateful that men would want to call themselves a feminist. I am cool with that! But then I didn't write the feminist bible so who am I to say. :)
