NaBloPoMo

National Blog Posting Month

Our month of manic daily blogging is a few scant days away! What sorts of musical content will your blog include during the course of month? Are you planning any special NaBloPoMo features that aren't typically a part of your blog?

Glad you brought this up, Peter. I hope to get more ideas from everyone since I am new to blogging. Right now I'm just randomly choosing topics to write about. This is harder than I thought! If I can, I would like to post about new groups that need exposure or cool websites that us music lovers would enjoy.

This is coming from someone with a slight OCD issue, but last year I found great success with keeping a tentative calendar of topics starting a few days before the event (and revising it through the end). I had one column for "must-post" topics that I definitely planned to talk (or sing) about, and a second column for ideas that hadn't really solidfied.

I didn't wind up posting every topic on the day they were original scheduled for, but having the calendar handy meant I never felt like I was out of ideas, and I didn't have too big of a post-pileup at the end of the month.

Maybe you can use some element of a calendar to work out a basic roster of new groups and websites now. Even if that's only a third or a half of your month of posts, you'll have a definite musical flavor throughout the event.

As for things others might enjoy reading, for artists you can offer downloads (either from your own site, or elsewhere), review their records, recap their bio, list their influences, compare them to similar artists, or link to a slew of good articles/interviews. For websites that are more user-oriented you can talk about why they're fun/useful, or offer a walk through; for more content-focused sites you can link to some of their best posts, or even try to interview one of their staff members.

I think I am going to try to revive my old Song Posts series. I don't expect it to be a primary feature of the month, because I don't necessarily have a ton of songs with extremely tangible memories just waiting to be blogged about, but there are a couple that I've been sitting on, and now seems like as good a time as any to put them in writing.

generally speaking, i blog all over the map -- anything from parenting to music. i've decided that i'm hitting music and books -- ones that i like (or loathe) for kids. see, i never understand fully why people who had interesting ideas about music have kids and then suddenly plug into "childrens music" -- i always believed that the kids might like all sorts of music like i do. and so i play a weird variety of stuff. yes, my tween daughter now adores high school musical 2, but she also is familiar with the beatles, the ramones, the stones, and plenty of things in, around, and between :)

I'm totally with you! I grew up on some current pop, as well as kiddie stuff from Really Rosie to Jem, but I also had a huge helping of Doo Wop, Beatles, Bowie, Supremes, Donna Summer, and more, and I still wear those influences proudly to this day.

You should check in on the favorite bands discussion to tell us more about the bands you grew up on, and the bands you've been playing for your tween!

My musical plans include:

(1) Song of The Day - This started as an offshoot of last year's NaBloPoMo but quickly stalled out. I record a single-take acoustic song (usually a cover), and post it immediately along with some background about my history with the song, as well as chords.

(2) Trio - My podcast concert of original songs. Hoping to complete at least one per week; for the last NaBloPoMo I did nine.

(3) Blog Review Soundtracks - Last year I read every NaBloPoMo blog, letter by letter. By far my most popular review was of S, in which I paired each blog on my review roster with a different Beatles tune. If I have enough time I may do a few similar soundtracked reviews, accompanied either by plain ol' commentary, a Song of the Day, or if I'm super-ambitious a narrating PodCast.

This is all a bit new and scary to me but I will be no doubt blogging about the beast aka my tuba :)

After recently rewatching High Fidelity, I may well use the idea of the Top 5 blah blah blah as a back up if I don't have anything interesting at work to post about! (and seeing as I don't work weekends :o) )
