Does anyone play their own music?

I play cello and flute, and blog mostly about learning the cello as an adult, and related music-related activities, which is mostly classical and folk music. Does anyone else post about their own musical endeavors?

I post about the music I'm playing but I also post my compositions. Making music is good therapy. I like to make my own when I can think of the ideas. In my side bar is my music for people to listen to.

Maybe it's just you and me, Hippo. Perhaps we should start a tuba-cello band. That should annoy the neighbors!

You might want to try National Solo Album Month too: http://www.nasoalmo.org/

"NaSoAlMo is a fun, free annual competition in which musicians write and record an entire album during the month of November - all by themselves."

I have only dabbled in composing, but I would like to learn to improvise.

I've been playing guitar for a little over ten years. I've been a songwriter almost as long, and my blog frequently features my own songs and thoughts on my continuing learning process, especially regarding singing. (I just posted my first podcast of the month, which you can hear on my blog or in the music player on my member page.)

I'm also an increasingly capable piano player, a clumsy-but-adequate electric bass player, and a novice upright bassist and clarinetist. I don't post about all of that very often, though.

It's good to find other people that make their own music. It's not a skill that many people try to develop. My technical ability sometimes gets in the way of my ideas which can be frustrating.

I do a lot of recording, much of it improvisational in nature. While I'm not trained (or even what is commonly thought of as proficient) on virtually any instrument, I'm usually able to get the sounds I want. I also love finding new ones. Most recently, I have been using the VOIP Skype to make interesting sounds. I also did some recording a couple weeks back with floral wire, a can of compressed air, and a piano.

I am in the infancy stages of learning guitar...acoustic. I also have an electric guitar that needs some repairs.

I have an acoustic guitar too. I think it's a really great instrument because you get such a full sound. Have you learnt any bar chords yet? I'm a bit rubbish at them.

Hello Marilyn! I used to play flute and a wee bit of piano which I've all but forgotten how to play. *Sigh* I don't really play the flute anymore either. Nowadays my contribution to music is "DeeJaying" or making playlists and compilations evoking any given feeling or mood. It's more of a skill than you might think: determining what other people are going to want to hear at any given moment and mixing that with what you want or need to hear and feel. I love music in all its forms and always look forward to hearing new sounds. However, I think recalling music to bring emotions and memories to the present of any moment is just as important as making music. That's what makes art/music so important. The artist puts a bit of themselves into their art (if they're even slightly good!) but the audience immerses themselves completely, perhaps with no regard to what the artist intended. The art then transcends the artist and becomes something altogether new. That's why art/music is so personal. It means something different to everyone. I encourage everyone to go back and find what their first album they bought, either on vinyl, CD, tape or whatever and listen to it today. Or find what their parents were listening to while growing up and give that another spin. Find some "memory" music and enjoy what it does to you today!
