Over my Head

I've been a long-time amateur photographer with my trusty Canon 35 mm. I recently started making sure I have digital copies of all of my photographs so that I can post them on my blog and other social networks. I started using GIMP to edit photographs, but since I have *no* experience with photo editing, I know I'm not using the tools effectively.

Anyone have some advice for a photoblogger who sucks at digital editing? I'd even be happy if you could point me to an online tutorial or somesuch.

Have you switched over to working with a digital camera or are you scanning film?

This question would determine which workflow is going to work best for you. I think it is a myth that you have to manipulate images to get them to look good, look at GIMP, photoshop or my preference Lightroom as being like the darkroom. If you are used to doing nothing in the darkroom then you should do very little in post, if you were a heavy mechanic in the lab then it might take you a little longer to get used to the methods of working, but the general ideas are much of a muchness....

I get digital copies of my pics from the photodeveloper. When I had the time and resources to develop my own film, I was pretty intense with my blocking, filters, etc. Now that I'm getting my film developed by others, the quality is hit and miss. I was hoping to do what I could with photoediting to make up for poorly developed pics.
